Tidewater Physical Therapy and Performance Announce Newport News One City Marathon Sponsorship and Cross-Training Program

Newport News Marathon Cross Training Program

Tidewater Physical Therapy and its Performance Centers are pleased to announce it will sponsor the Newport News One City Marathon and offer a 12-week cross-training program to prepare regional athletes in the months before the city’s first full marathon road race.

“This event a great thing for the community and local businesses, and because Tidewater Physical Therapy is sponsoring it, we have the ability to help people race this distance and race it well,” said Elizabeth Gugliotti, the Marketing and Community Outreach Coordinator for Tidewater’s clinics in the Virginia Peninsula Region. “We want to take people who don’t think they can do it, and show them they can.”

The first step is committing to the race itself.

Runners in the inaugural Newport News One City Marathon will take tothe streets of Newport News on Sunday, Mar. 15, 2015. Runners will start at Newport News Park and cross the finish line 26.2 miles later at the Newport News Victory Arch.

The race will be followed by the One City, One Celebration Victory in Landing Park.

Runners not interested in taking on the full marathon distance can ease their way into it by participating in one of the event’s four races – the full Marathon and Marathon Relay, which will begin at 7 a.m.;the Maritime 8k at 7:45 a.m.; or the Nautical Mile Fun Run at 10 a.m.

The cost of the race is $80 for the Marathon, $50 for the Marathon Relay, $45 for the Maritime 8k and $10 for the Nautical Mile. Prices will increase for the Marathon and Maritime 8k by $5 beginning Mar. 1. Active Duty Military Servicemen and Women will receive the discounted rate through race day.

For those runners who sign up for the Tidewater Physical Therapy and Performance Center cross-training program, the cost of the marathon registration is included. Space is limited.

The nearly three-month-long cross-training program is open to all members of the community for $250 and will be held at the Tidewater Performance Center in Newport News.

Beginning Dec. 15 and running through Mar. 4, Tidewater Performance Coaches will lead participants in two cross-training workouts per week to improve muscle endurance and reduce the risk of injury.

“Cross-training is such an important part of any endurance training program, and here it will be taught by a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has worked with runners,” said Katie Benick, MS, CSCS, CPT, the Director of Performance Services for Tidewater Performance Centers. Tidewater Physical Therapy operates three Performance Centers – Newport News, Gloucester and Suffolk.

Often times, runners don’t realize the importance of adding cross-training to their workouts.

“This program has been designed specifically for this race,” Benick said. “It will make the runners more efficient and better prepare them. We’ll be cross-training because it’s so important to have strength and conditioning as well as running fitness. We will work on running form, balance, core strength, leg strength, and basically trying to prepare the body and correct any imbalances.”

Training sessions will be led by Performance Coach Jamel Cooper, who studied Exercise Science at Georgia Southern University and interned at Velocity Sports before receiving his Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification and moving to Virginia and joining the Tidewater Performance training team.

The two training sessions a week will be held Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. at the Newport News Performance Center, located at 751 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard.

The training package also includes a detailed running schedule; weekly group emailfeaturing training strategies, nutritional tips and running techniques; an optional weekly group run; two running seminars (a “Sneaker Clinic” at Point 2 Running Company and a “Nutrition for Runners” lecture); a Tidewater Performance “LIVE LIFE STRONGER” t-shirt; and entry to the One City Marathon.

“The goal is to get people prepared,” Benick said. “It can be your first marathon, or you can be an avid runner, but we’re bringing people together and gearing them up to endure a 26-mile run.”
