Trainer Profile: Amy Schendel
Tidewater Performance, a division of Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc., is honored to welcome Athletic Trainer Amy L. Schendel to the Tidewater Sports Medicine Team.
Amy, a certified athletic trainer, works at 751 J. Clyde Morris Boulevard in Newport News with both the physical therapists in the Oyster Point Clinic and the adult fitness and sports performance trainers in the Performance Center.
Her mission? Work closely with the therapists to provide athletic injury prevention training, recognition, measurements, evaluation, immediate care, and rehabilitation / reconditioning in accordance with the standards established by the National Athletic Trainers Association, the State Board of Medicine, and assigned schools.
Amy is already collaborating closely with Tidewater’s entire sports medicine team – from physical therapists to trainers – to develop safe, return to play plans for injured athletes. She will also follow up with those athletes on their own turf, when they return to play on their fields. Her athletic training services will be an added resource to the community, area schools and special events.
Amy earned her Master’s of Science in Physical Education from Old Dominion University, and her Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training from East Stroudsburg University.
This past spring, Amy returned to Old Dominion to teach Advanced First Aid & Emergency Care.
Amy comes to Tidewater from Christopher Newport University where she was the Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer, assisting in daily injury prevention and treatments of NCAA Division III football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball, baseball, lacrosse, basketball and softball athletes. She also coordinated medical coverage of the 2010 NCAA Division III USA South Athletic Conference Basketball tournament and served as the medical coverage coordinator for the conference’s softball tournament.
Her certifications include the National Athletic Trainers’ Board of Certification, the American Red Cross Health and Safety Services Instructor, Graston Technique Module 1, and American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Healthcare Provider and Emergency Response.
