Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
Treatment Program

Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. offers a progressive approach to the management of TMD. Our individualized programs serve as either the primary or corresponding treatment to splint therapy, medications, and surgery for TMD.

Conservative Pre-operative Treatment

In most cases, TMD is successfully treated using non-intrusive, conservative measures including physical therapy.

Our program emphasizes patient education and self-management for long-term improvement. The treatment provides:

  • Balancing and relaxing the neck and jaw muscles using heat, muscle stimulation, ultrasound and massage
  • Maximizing function with mobilization and exercise
  • Decreasing pain with modalities
  • Instructing the patient on proper resting positions

Post-Arthroscopy Rehabilitation

Physical therapy is critical to maintain mobility and prevent scar tissue proliferation during the healing process following TMD arthroscopy and arthrocentesis. Each patient receives a specially designed rehabilitation program implemented by the physical therapist which includes a variety of techniques such as heat, TENS, ultrasound, exercise, and joint mobilization.

Our treatment program works to restore function and reduce or eliminate pain.

Post-Arthrotomy Open Joint Rehabilitation

Occasionally, patients require open-joint surgery to repair a displaced or torn disk in the joint. Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. has developed a structured post-operative program involving protection, mobilization, and functional phases. The physical therapist will guide each patient through his/her post-operative program.

We offer patients individualized treatment programs and therapies including:

  • Post-op Rehabilitation
  • Mobilization
  • Exercise Regime
  • Electric Stimulation
  • Heat/Ice
  • Massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Relaxation Training

Coordination with the Patient's Physician

A referral from the patient's physician or dentist is required for physical therapy. We participate with most major health insurance and health maintenance organization (HMO) plans.

Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. provides status reports to the referring physician to communicate the patient's progress throughout the treatment process.
