Rheumatic Disorders
Treatment Program

Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. offers three program options for arthritic and connective-tissue disorders.

With an emphasis on patient instruction and self-management techniques, the goals of these programs are to:

  • Improve the patient's mobility, strength, and function
  • Prevent future health problems
  • Effectively manage pain
  • Improve posture
  • Provide the patient with a regime of self-management techniques
Osteoporosis

Each patient receives an individualized exercise treatment program designed by the physical therapist to address his/her specific needs. Instruction on activities of daily living, posture, and positioning are incorporated and where indicated, a dietary plan coordinated by a dietitian, is included. The program's objectives are to:

  • Maintain bone density
  • Prevent and treat osteoporosis
  • Maximize functional levels
  • Encourage an active lifestyle
  • Decrease pain
Arthritis

The use of physical therapy minimizes the debilitation, pain, and deformity associated with arthritis. Our comprehensive program treats arthritic disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, Ehler-Danlos syndrome, and ankylosing spondylolisthesis and may include:

  • Physical therapy modalities
  • Home exercises
  • Patient instruction emphasizing self-treatment to minimize pain and prevent deformity
Fibromyalgia

Our fibromyalgia program offers a multidisciplinary approach with a strong emphasis on education for self-management of this condition and includes:

Physical Therapy: Treatment including trigger point techniques with instruction in posture, body mechanics, strengthening, range of motion, and aerobic exercise.

Massage Therapy: Deep therapeutic massage releases trigger points and relaxes muscle spasms and tension.

Aquatic Therapy Program

Aquatic therapy is especially effective for "pain sensitive" patients, individuals with prior mobility limitations, or others with persistent conditions. These programs are offered at our specially designed state-of-the-art aquatic physical therapy facility, Tidewater Aquatic Rehabilitation Centers in Hampton and Williamsburg facilities.

Coordination with the Patient's Physician

A referral from the patient's physician or dentist is required for physical therapy. We participate with most major health insurance and health maintenance organization (HMO) plans.

Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. provides status reports to the referring physician to communicate the patient's progress throughout the treatment process.
