Laura Coleman, PT, DPT began her career in Architecture with her Architectural Studies degree from the University of Illinois. After a few years, she went back to school at Old Dominion University and received her Masters of Physical Therapy and her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Leaving a successful career and going back to school for Physical therapy was inspired in the early 1990’s. “I began volunteering at Riverside Rehab Institute and found I enjoyed the rehab process. Change is scary and hard for most people—especially when it is due to an accident or illness. I found great satisfaction in helping and watching people learn to adapt to a new normal in a safe environment. I feel it is my responsibility to provide a safe and comfortable environment for people to heal and adapt to their injuries/disabilities.”
Her father, an ER physician, told her when she graduated from PT school to stay humble. He reminded Laura, “You will never know everything and you need to listen to people—you will figure out what they need.” Laura strives to listen and understand her patients and uses an individualized plan of care and cultural sensitivity for each and every patient.
She is trained in lymphedema wrapping and measuring and fitting training and especially enjoys treating UE injuries-shoulders, elbows, wrists. Her experience has extended to wound care as well. Once a ballet dancer herself, she is now keeping up with her 14 year old daughter who dances and swims. Laura also enjoys renovating her house and occasionally volunteering at her daughter’s school when she is not in the clinic.
Many of the physical therapists at Tidewater Physical Therapy Inc., including Laura, hold Direct Access Certification through the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy allowing them to evaluate and treat patients without a prescription. As part of your healthcare team, a physical therapist will make an assessment of your condition and create a plan to start you on the road to wellness. Our team will communicate with your physician of record and obtain a referral, if necessary, for your continued treatment. We will also work with your insurance carrier to make sure services are covered by your plan.
