How well do you move? Complimentary Functional Movement Screens in Gloucester.

FMS exampleAs part of its mission to help the community stay injury free, Tidewater Physical Therapy’s Gloucester Courthouse Clinic will offer Functional Movement Screens (FMS) on March 20 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.

The event is complimentary and offered as part of Tidewater Physical Therapy’s sponsorship of the Annual Daffodil Festival 5K on April 6.

Participants should wear workout clothes. Physical therapists and personal trainers will conduct the FMS, which takes participants through a series of movements, like squats and leg raises, among others.

“The FMS is a ranking and grading system that documents movement patterns that are key to normal function,” said Karen Kovacs, PT, MPT, OCS. Kovacs is the Clinical Director of the Tidewater Physical Therapy clinic located in southern Gloucester in Hayes. She is also a Level 1 USA Triathlon Coach.

The FMS screen is so powerful that even the NFL uses with its players. The Seattle Seahawks, for example, implemented the FMS as “an integral part of their off season training,” according to “The Seahawks training staff put their players through the FMS, then work with the Strength and Conditioning staff to design appropriate workout programs based on the results of the screen.”

“By screening these patterns, physical therapists and personal trainers can identify asymmetries and functional limitations that may place an individual training for a particular event or sport at risk of injury,” said Kovacs.

Participants will receive a copy of their score sheet. The physical therapists and personal and sports performance trainers of the Tidewater Performance Center will be available to discuss developing individualized programs to improve scores and movement patterns that could lead to injuries.

Located at 6970 Fox Hunt Lane in the heart of Gloucester’s historic Courthouse District, the Gloucester Courthouse Clinic offers comprehensive physical therapy as well as orthopedic care, including treatment for neck and back pain, total joint replacement treatment, sports injury rehabilitation, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders treatment, certified hand therapy and balance and vertigo treatment.

There are also a personal and sports performance trainers at its adjoining Performance Center, where patients can coordinate their personal training with their physical therapist to take their recovery to the next level, or where others can improve their wellness and life performance.
