Functional Capacity Evaluations & Impairment Ratings Exam

fce photo 1

The Tidewater Physical Therapy, Inc. Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) System is based on sound methodology and two decades of experience in functional testing.  The test utilizes a comprehensive battery of simulated work activity tests, evaluative procedures, questionnaires and observation to objectively quantify an individual’s physical capacity and vocational ability.  Results are then compared to job demands and recommendations are made for work restrictions and/or appropriateness for full-duty work.

What separates our FCE’s from others is the interaction between the clinician and patient.  We utilize an active “coaching” philosophy when conducting FCE’s.  For those clients who may be self-limiting function due to fear of re-injury, this coaching role often leads to a ‘break-through’.  Fear of re-injury no longer limits performance; as the patient effectively proves to themselves that they are safe to perform the physical demands required by their job.

A Permanent Impairment Rating begins with an  evaluation of an individual’s range of motion, strength, atrophy, arthritis, and neurological function.  Results for musculoskeletal problems are reported as a percentage of upper extremity, lower extremity or whole person impairment according to standards established by the AMA Guides.

Permanent Impairment Ratings exams are performed by physical therapists with more than 20 years experience and in compliance with the fifth edition of the Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, published by the American Medical Association (AMA Guides).

A physician’s referral is required for functional testing.
