Physical Therapists play a key role in restoring function and assisting cancer patients to return to their daily life and routines, says the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
The first stage in treatment of cancer is often surgery. Rehabilitation following surgery is an important first step along the road to recovery for those living with the disease.
Following surgery patients often experience a loss of range of motion and function. In the case of breast cancer, physical therapists encourage individuals to do upper-body exercises within a few days of surgery. Exercise and scar massage help the skin to regain flexibility, reduce overall tightness, and aids in prevention of scar contracture; a condition that can severely limit motion and function.
Consider exercise as one possible weapon against the physical and psychological impact of breast cancer to combat the fatigue and lack of strength often experienced following surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
